June 7Jun 7 so ive been running an IC-7300 for about three years now and honestly its been a great radio, no real complaints. but ive been eyeing the 7610 for a while and trying to figure out if theres enough of a real-world difference to justify spending another thousand-something dollars on it. like on paper the dual watch and the two independent receivers sounds really useful but im not sure how often id actually use that in practice from a home station doing mostly general HF work, some contesting here and there, maybe a bit of digi modes.the 7300 spectrum scope is already really good in my opinion, i was skeptical of it before i got the radio but now i use it constantly. is the 7610 scope noticeably better or is it more of the same thing just wider. ive read conflicting things online and half those reviews seem like they were written by people who spent 20 minutes with the radio at a hamfest.anyone running a 7610 who came from a 7300, was there a moment where you thought yeah this was worth it or did it feel like more of a sidegrade with extra features you dont really need
June 8Jun 8 made that exact jump about 18 months ago. honestly the scope on the 7610 is better, wider and the touchscreen feels a bit more responsive but its not like night and day if you're used to the 7300. the real difference for me was the dual receiver during contests. SO2R-lite kind of thing where you can be running on one band and listening on another without a second radio taking up bench space. if you dont do much contesting though i can see the argument for just staying put.the roofing filters on the 7610 are also better which matters on a crowded band, 3khz vs the 7300s 15khz on the default i think. makes a difference when 40m is wall to wall on a weekend. but if your antenna situation isnt great the radio upgrade will only do so much anyway. thats the thing nobody wants to say.
June 10Jun 10 i went from a 7300 to a 7610 and then back to running the 7300 again lol. sold the 7610 to fund an amp and some antenna work and honestly the antenna stuff did more for my operating than the radio upgrade ever did. the 7610 is a nicer radio dont get me wrong but if your shack setup is already sorted and you just want better results on HF, more aluminum in the air will beat a better receiver most days.
