IC-7300 overshoot issue with amplifiers - any real-world solutions?

Featured Replies

I've been considering upgrading to an IC-7300 for my base station, but I keep reading about the overshoot issue when paired with amplifiers. The only problem with the 7300 is the overshoot issue, and unless you're using it with an amp, it really doesn't matter. Since I plan to add an Acom 1000 in the future, I'm wondering if any of you have practical experience with this combination.

Has anyone found effective workarounds? I've seen mention of sequencers and modified keying circuits, but would appreciate hearing from operators who've actually dealt with this in their shacks.

I've run my 7300 with an AL-80B for two years now. The overshoot is manageable with a proper T/R sequencer - I use an Array Solutions RTS-4. Set the delays correctly and you'll have no issues. The 7300's performance otherwise is excellent.

Before you worry too much, test your specific amp combination. Many modern solid-state amps handle the 7300's characteristics just fine. I've used mine with both tube and SS amps without problems once properly configured.

Consider the newer amplifiers designed with SDR radios in mind - they're more tolerant of fast rise times. The IC-7300 seems to be constantly sold because it is probably the best selling HF radio in the history of amateur radio. There are thousands of them out there. The abundance of used units means many are upgrading, not necessarily having problems.
