June 5Jun 5 so ive had my IC-7300 for about 3 years now and honestly its been a great radio, no complaints really, but ive been eyeing the IC-7610 mostly because of the dual watch and the roofing filters. i do a fair bit of contesting and sometimes just casual HF work on 40 and 20, and during busy contest weekends the 7300 starts to feel a little cramped i guess is the word. like adjacent signals bleeding in even when im tweaking the digital filters as much as i can.the thing is the price jump is pretty significant and i already have a decent station otherwise — running into a AL-811H and a hex beam up about 35 feet. so the amp and antenna side of things is solid. its really just the rig itself im second-guessing.anyone made that jump or a similar one and actually noticed a real difference in practice? not talking about spec sheets, i can read those myself, just curious if its a night and day thing in actual use or more of a marginal improvement that sounds better on paper than it is in the shack.
June 6Jun 6 made almost exactly that switch about 18 months ago, went from a 7300 to a 7610 and yeah the dual receiver alone was worth it for me during sweepstakes. being able to monitor a second band without a second radio changes how you operate, at least if you're doing any kind of serious contesting. the roofing filter situation is also genuinely better in a crowded band, not dramatically better but enough that you notice it when things get really busy on 40 meters on a friday night.that said if you're doing a lot of casual operating and not pushing the radio hard during pile-ups and contest weekends i think the 7300 is honestly one of the best value radios ever made and the upgrade might feel underwhelming. really depends how much of your time is contest vs everything else. for me it was worth every penny but i was also doing a lot of state qso parties and stuff where having that second vfo with a real independent receiver mattered.
June 7Jun 7 the roofing filters are the real thing to look at imo. the 7300 has a 3kHz roofing filter if i remember right and the 7610 has tighter options which makes a difference when someone is 2kHz away running a kilowatt. i havent done that exact comparison myself but ive talked to a few guys at the club who have and they all said the same thing — great radio but maybe not a must-upgrade unless you're really running into the limits of the 7300 regularly. also check if your current mic and desk setup will even feel different with the new radio before you commit, sometimes people swap radios and realize the rest of the chain was the actual weak link the whole time.
